Create a guest collection via a Box storage gateway

Last Updated: July 24, 2019

Create a Box Guest Collection

Once your storage administrator has created a Box storage gateway, you can create guest collections. A guest collection enables you to share you data in Box with other Globus users.

Search for the endpoint

To create a guest collection using a Box storage gateway, first find the endpoint using the Endpoints page. You can either search for the endpoint’s name or search for keywords associated with the endpoint or the storage gateway. (The endpoint administrator can tell you the endpoint’s name.) When you’ve found the endpoint, click the right arrow next to its name.

Search for endpoint

Click the Collections tab and then click Add a Collection to launch the Collections app. The Collections app will help you create a new collection.

Add a collection

Allow the collections app to manage your collections

The first time you create a collection on an endpoint, Globus will ask you to allow the Collections app to manage your collections. Click Allow.

Permit the Collections app to manage your collections

Select a Storage Gateway

Next, you’ll be shown a list of the storage gateways available on the endpoint. Click the storage gateway with "(Box)" next to it.

Choose a storage gateway

Select a Globus identity and a Local account

The first time you create a collection using this storage gateway, you’ll be prompted to select a Local Account (Box login) and a Globus identity (an identity you can use to log into Globus). These two identities must be the same. If the storage gateway is configured by your administrator to require specific domains (e.g., "uchicago.edu", See the --domain option in the Managing Storage Gateways Authentication Policies section of the GCSv5 Installation Guide for more details.), your Box login and your Globus identity must match the domain policies. If you are having trouble with this step, see the Common Errors section below.

Click Continue when you’ve selected your Box login and matching Globus identity.

Register local username and Globus identity

Create the collection

After registering your identity, you must enter a name for the collection, and may set other properties, such as a description and keywords. After filling out the form, click Create Collection to create the new collection.

Next steps

The guest collection is now ready to use. The Collections app shows several next steps.

You can now allow other users and groups to access your guest collection by following the "Share data on this new collection with others" link. See How To Share Data Using Globus for more details.

Common Errors

The following are common errors that occur when trying to create a guest collection.

Missing an identity

missing an identity

This error occurs when your Globus Account does not contain an identity that meets the domain requirements for the storage gateway you selected. The error may list the allowed domains, if not ask your endpoint administrator what domains are allowed. You must either link an identity with an allowed domain, or log in to that identity directly to create a guest collection.

No local accounts

no local accounts

This error occurs when the Box Enterprise to which the Storage Gateway gives access does not have a login that exactly matches any of your allowed Globus identities. Make sure the email field on your Box profile page exactly matches your Globus identity, and that the domain for that email is one of the allowed domains for the Storage Gateway.
